Library and Knowledge Services are celebrating Health Literacy Month this October. Poor Health Literacy is a cause for concern.
Health Literacy levels in England:
- 43% of adults (16-65) struggle with text-based health information
- 61% of adults (16-65) cannot understand health information that includes both text and numbers
West Midlands ranks among the 20% worst local authorities for health literacy nationally.
The following groups are most disadvantaged:
- People with low educational attainment
- Older people
- People who have a long-term health condition
- People with disabilities
- People with sensory impairment
- People with low information and technology skills
- People living with socio-economic disadvantage
