Library and Knowledge Services are celebrating Health Literacy Month this October. Poor Health Literacy is a cause for concern.

 

Health Literacy levels in England:

  • 43% of adults (16-65) struggle with text-based health information
  • 61% of adults (16-65) cannot understand health information that includes both text and numbers

West Midlands ranks among the 20% worst local authorities for health literacy nationally.

The following groups are most disadvantaged:

  • People with low educational attainment
  • Older people
  • People who have a long-term health condition
  • People with disabilities
  • People with sensory impairment
  • People with low information and technology skills
  • People living with socio-economic disadvantage
