About this event

Fully funded training in consultation skills is now available for all primary care clinicians. This will be suitable for those who are new to practice, those who have been out of practice for a short time, or those who would simply like a refresher.

The training will be held on a quarterly basis on the dates below.

Dates:

14th July 2022

20th October 2022

26th January 2023

Each session will be held at 12-4pm and will include:

• Exercise in small groups, reflections on what is going well, and where the challenges arise, consulting with my own patients/their relatives in the real world

• Presentation and discussion of Calgary Cambridge consultation model, the most comprehensive model available.

• Demonstration of skills; practising in groups of three; whole group practicing with “hot seating”; relevant short discussion-based exercises

• Opening the consultation – rapidly assessing the “agenda”

• Getting the full story (including “Spectrum of Prompts” exercise)

• Patient education discussion – answering patient questions – moving away from a “doctor lecturing” format

• Redirecting a talkative patient

• Three-way (or more) consultations (paediatric; adult patient and relative(s); interpreters)

• Then a section on tricky challenges experienced by the audience. Addressed in groups of three with feedback to the whole group as a final task. Examples that we find coming up with audiences include:

o Consultations with patients who bring unrealistic expectations

o Responding to dissatisfied patients

• Remote Consultation Skills

• Final section – my own plan and learning needs
