Online functional skills training is now being offered to primary care staff by the Black Country Training Hub.

BKSB, which stands for basic key skills builder, partnered with NHS England, to give access to NHS organisations to BKSB for free and can be accessed via the Black Country Training Hub.

BKSB is a platform that helps prepare employees who would like to take a functional skills qualification. This may be to meet the entry criteria for an apprenticeship or just as a general upskilling exercise to gain confidence in maths or English.

Upon registering new users will be prompted to complete an initial assessment which determines level of ability for English or maths (or both). Once this has been completed the system will produce an individual learning plan and provides engaging video content and exercises to improve skills. After completing the learning resources the system assesses the learners progress. Having developed new skills the system will then offer exam practice in readiness to take a functional skills test.

The learning style is particularly beneficial for people who are happy with self directed online study. Individuals can study at their own pace and access the system at any time with no pressure. To be added as a user to bksb please complete this short form https://forms.office.com/e/b8gNjKE3GT or email primarycare.blackcountry@nhs.net.

Note: The BKSB platform will not provide the functional skills examination or qualification itself, but this can be taken for free via ‘Open Awards’ (subject to meeting the examination terms and conditions) at a later date. Please contact the Training Hub if you would like more information about taking a functional skills test with Open Awards.
