First Contact Physiotherapist (FCP) roles require advanced skills across many areas based upon the principles of shared decision-making and person-centred care.

In England, the First Contact Practitioners and Advanced Practitioners in Primary Care: (Musculoskeletal) Roadmap has been developed by Health Education England (HEE) and was released in October 2020. It provides a clear educational pathway from undergraduate to Advanced Practice for clinicians wishing to pursue a career in primary care.

The Roadmap outlines the education, training and skills required in order to enable the development of a portfolio and to be registered as an FCP. It is aligned with the MSK core capabilities framework released in 2018.
