If you have any queries, please contact primarycare.blackcountry@nhs.net

The Black Country Portfolio Careers scheme has supported over 70 clinicians to access education, training, and development opportunities since it began in 2018. The scheme is open to all Primary Care Networks (PCNs) within the Black Country footprint and provides a financial incentive to PCNs to upskill their clinical workforce to work differently or expand their current services.

Funding of up to £7,500 per applicant is available to all substantively employed clinical staff (including GPs, nurses, physician associates, pharmacists, FCPs and other ARRS staff), to develop portfolio roles and enhanced patient care. The funding can be utilised to support educational costs, training, and supervisory opportunities.

Supported areas of interest have included:

  • MSK
  • Medical Education
  • Paediatrics
  • Gynaecology
  • Minor Surgery
  • Frailty
  • Urology
  • Diabetes
  • Pain Management
  • Cardiology
  • Lifestyle Medicine
  • End of Life/Palliative Care

The scheme aims to develop flexible career opportunities whilst retaining clinical staff, as this strengthens and develops areas of specialities for both the individual and their PCN.

Portfolio interests must be in line with local clinical priorities and population health needs, and a clear plan must be in place to show how skills and knowledge will be used to support the PCN and patient population, therefore support must be obtained from the PCN Clinical Director.

The Black Country Training Hub is offering Primary Care Networks the chance to upskill their clinical workforce through portfolio careers in Women’s Health or Travel Health.

The funding is open to all Primary Care Networks within the Black Country footprint and provides a financial incentive up to the value of £7,500 per applicant to cover accredited courses and backfill. This is one-off funding, travel and accommodation and any other ongoing costs will not be funded.

The Accredited courses available include:
